Los perfiles nutricionales y alegaciones ofrecen un gran valor añadido a los productos alimentarios y en la actualidad escasamente se construyen sobre la base de ECA. Más bien, se basan en observaciones epidemiológicas o en experimentos in vitro. Mientras que los ECA son de hecho el estándar de la farmacología ya que son la única manera de proporcionar datos fiables y basados en la evidencia, son difíciles de aplicar a entornos basados ​​en la nutrición.

En LABFUN se llevarán a cabo investigaciones básicas para ganar conocimiento profundo de la etiología de los trastornos cardiovasculares y cardiometabólico; se abordará el papel preventivo y terapéutico de micronutrientes seleccionados en la modulación de este tipo de enfermedades , mediante la obtención de la evidencia mecanicista sólida de sus acciones; se llevarán a cabo estudios en animales para descubrir cualquier actividad biológica in vivo, abordando también cuestiones de seguridad ; se realizarán estudios en humanos dirigidos (primero en voluntarios sanos después de pacientes) para evaluar las acciones fisiomoduladoras de los micronutrientes y su metabolismo ; se colaborará en el desarrollo y validación de alimentos funcionales o nutracéuticos con alto potencial para entrar en el mercado.
